Also known as Lakkom Falls, Munnar’s Lakkam Waterfalls are located 7,300 feet above the sea level. An interesting feature about this waterfall is that it starts from a plateau and not a hill, which is the case with most other falls. Originating from the Eravikulam Plateau, Lakkam Waterfalls collect into a pool.
Ensconced in a green surrounding, Lakkam Waterfalls are enclosed by a dense collection of Vaga trees and boulders which one needs to climb to get very close to the falls. Taking pictures apart, the falls are famous for boulder hiking and even bathing in the pool.

1. The best time to visit the falls is during monsoon or winter. The winter months of October to March are the best as the waterfalls are intact and the weather is quite pleasant, even though afternoons can be quite sunny. The rainy season, which lasts from July to October, makes the waterfall swell to its maximum capacity. However, very heavy rains also make the national park and the falls inaccessible.
2. To access the Lakkam Waterfalls, buy your tickets at the ticket counter and head to the stairway to walk up several steps, crossing about 100 metres to get closer to the falls. While the steps start out as ordinary steps, once you get closer to the waterfall, they start to look more like boulders which need a little bit of caution to climb. Nevertheless, the trail is very well documented and easy to follow even if you are walking all by yourself.

There is a string that borders off the high-risk area from the general water pool. However, many adventurous tourists still take a chance and head further inwards.
6. Some monkeys may greet you along the hiking trail. As they are usually hungry and quick to grab your food, it is recommended not to eat while you visit the Lakkam Waterfalls. However, there is a café before the trail begins. It is safe to consume snacks here, without the threat of monkeys.
7. Another thing to watch out for is leeches. As this is a tropical forest area, there is a huge concentration of leeches along the trail. To prevent leeches from latching on to your legs and sucking your blood, you can apply a chloroxylenol-based antiseptic liquid like Dettol or Savlon on your skin before hiking. If at all you get attacked by leeches, carry some turmeric powder to loosen their grip and make them fall off your skin.

How to Reach Lakkam Waterfalls, Munnar

By Air: Cochin International Airport happens to be the closest airport if you wish to fly to Munnar. Almost 130 km from the waterfalls, this airport takes 4 hours to reach.
By Train: If you’re on a budget but still big on comfort, you should travel by train. Book yourself a route that stops at either the Aluva Railway Station or the Kalady Railway Station (which is also known as Angamaly Railway Station). Both the stations are almost equidistant from Lakkam Waterfalls and take about 4 hours to navigate through the 130 odd kilometres.
By Bus: Solo travellers, who don’t wish to spend much on their travel and also save on hotel nights, might want to try arriving here in a long-distance bus. Overnight buses let you watch a movie before you can doze off to sleep. The major bus stop closest to the Lakkom Falls is the Marayur Bus Stop. At a distance of about 15 km away, the remaining road journey will not take more than half an hour. You can look for an auto rickshaw or a shared jeep to save on the cost. Bear in mind that you book a return auto rickshaw since it is a bit difficult to find a ride back from the falls as it is located in the interiors. The other option is to hire a taxi.
